In a tapered roller bearing the contact lines of the rollers, the inner ring and the outer ring all meet at a single point on the axis of rotation, which is what gives it such high combined load capacity. The separable design makes it easy to fit and to set the preload or clearance, and it is normally used in pairs so that load is carried in both directions.
